“What flames, Sir, what flames,

And how that fire never ceased

And how there was no smoke,

As if from within itself it was burning

And in itself existence rested.

What a staff, Sir,

And how it mocked Pharaoh’s serpents,

And his painted sepulchres,

How it swallowed their words from between their lips

Until their lies spurted through their nostrils.

What seas I parted with it,

What roads I pierced through the desert,

What stars illuminated its point

And what an umbrella it became through the day.

What stones, Sir, what stones,

What fine cutting,

How the words sparkled –

The letter and the sun,

The jot and the star.

What holy ark, Sir, what an ark,

What short-circuit once a year,

What miracle from a few twigs

So that even today the place remains unknown

Amongst the unending questions of the mind.

Everything is gone,

Everything we forgot,

Nothing was saved.

Only your voice

Was worthy,

When you said:

This one will not pass on the other side,

And him will the dust not cover here,

Him, I shall take with me.”
