abide WitH us – Daniel Ionita
We’re born entwined in agony and love,
Blind, helpless, unaware of all the fuss,
A mother’s smile through tears is all we crave,
But the first cry is just “abide with us”.
When with the buds of the springtime, bold and bright
We’re chasing love, like flowers through the grass,
And gaily drink the drunkenness of life,
We playfully exclaim “abide with us”
In life’s hot summer, crazy whirling winds
Are throwing sometimes diamonds, sometimes brass,
Bereft of time, we utter, on the run,
A seldom, desperate, “abide with us”.
And then, when, squeezed under years, we’re casting
One longing eye behind, before we pass,
A strange and lonely dream starts creeping nightly,
And whispers full of fright “abide with us”.
Abide with us, the sun is setting meekly,
And quietly our end of days shall pass;
So linger please, to break and share our nurture,
And through the night, we pray, abide with us.
